In the beginning . . .
God saw that it was good . . . God never said it was perfect. From the very beginning there was room for Christ.
Was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God
Words are important. God created through word because words make things real. God was thinking creation and then spoke it into existence. Words make things real like: “I do,” or “There, there, mommy’s here,” or “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” or “It’s a girl, it’s a boy!” In the church we refer to Christ as the Word of God because through Christ, salvation is made real.
In him was life . . .
Or “Christ is what it means to be alive.” Paul says something quite profound in Galatians 2:20—“It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives within me.” The life we find in Christ is a selfless joy of reckless abandon. For example: Youth coming home from a mission trip, no longer caring what they look like . . .
The life was light and the light shined in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.
It is the first thing God created. It is a constant of the universe. It is how we see the world around us. It does not say there will be no darkness; rather the light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it.
